The Barents Region covers north-western Russia and the northernmost parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway.
GIT Barents is an EU Interreg funded project which started already in 1997 and was finalised in April 2008.
A harmonised geographic database at the scales of 1:1M, 1:3M and 1:12M has been compiled, built on national data sets.
Based on the global trends to establish Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI), the project has established a regional SDI built on accepted standards.
