The Barents Geographic Data Base (Barents GDB)

General information

  • The Barents Region covers a vast area on the top of Europe. It extends over the counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark in Norway, Västerbotten and Norrbotten in Sweden, Kainuu, Northern Ostrobothnia and Lapland in Finland, Murmansk oblast, Arkhangelsk oblast, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Komi in Russia.
  • The national cadastre and mapping organisations and the regional cadastral offices of northwestern Russia have co-operated to produce a homogenous geographic database covering the whole region. From the database a number of derived products have been created.
  • The co-operation has been an integrated part of both the Barents Programme and the Interreg III A Nord Programme, Kolarctic.
  • The geographic and thematic information on the Barents Region can be viewed at www.gitbarents.com which contains our interactive map.

The Barents Geographic Data Base (Barents GDB)

contains homogenized information on administrative boundaries, transportation, hydrography, land cover and land use, settlements, elevation, protected areas and geographical names. The Barents GDB is produced from existing national databases and is planned to be updated annually. The present version is estimated to show the overall conditions as of 2005. The database is available in geo-graphic coordinates, WGS84, or in other coordinate systems. The Barents GDB contains the full amount of vector data organized in ESRI Personal Geodatabase. The Barents GDB Data Specifications describes an integrated multi-national database. The specifications include the feature type catalogue.

  • It has been designed to support GIS applications rather than to generate hard copy maps. It is adapted for use and presentation on the scales of about 1:1 000 000, 1:3 000 000 and 1:12 000 000.
  • It can be delivered on CD or other media, in different formats and in parts or as a whole, containing vector data organised in ESRI shapefiles and annotation files (for text).

The Barents Geographical Names Data Set contains roughly 10 000 names of settlements, lakes, rivers and other geographic features.

  • It is a integrated part of the Barents Geographic Data Base.

The Barents Map on CD contains raster data.
